Celebrating Earth Day: Building Hope and a Healthier Planet
At Roc Solid Foundation, every day is about building hope. But on Earth Day, we’re proud to also celebrate how we’re building a healthier planet — one playset, one celebration and one small, sustainable choice at a time.
As we work toward reaching every child fighting cancer, we know that the impact we leave behind matters. Not just in the lives of families, but in the environment we all share. That’s why this Earth Day, we’re shining a spotlight on two important initiatives that align our mission of hope with a commitment to sustainability.
Biodegradable Confetti: Joy That Leaves No Trace
There’s nothing quite like the moment when a child fighting cancer sees their brand new playset for the very first time… it’s pure magic. Volunteers form a tunnel, the child runs through and confetti fills the air, celebrating their bravery and bringing the joy they deserve.
But we also want that joy to be clean and responsible. That’s why all of our confetti poppers are filled with biodegradable confetti. It means that even as we shower our warriors with celebration, we’re making sure we’re not leaving a mess for the planet. The smiles last forever, but the confetti doesn’t.
Reusing Plastic Hardware Bags: Small Pieces, Big Impact
Playset builds require a lot of pieces of hardware. Our incredible volunteers sort hundreds of pieces of hardware by hand for each playset project and organize them in small plastic bags. Dozens of these plastic bags are used for each playset project to make every step of the build process as smooth and simple as possible.
This year, we launched a new plastic bag collection program at our builds. Instead of throwing them away, our volunteers now collect these plastic hardware bags so they can be reused for future builds. It’s a simple change, but one that significantly reduces plastic waste and keeps useful materials in rotation.
As our friends at Lynnhaven River Now put it, “Plastic never really decomposes. Instead, it just breaks down into smaller pieces that accumulate in the environment. Plastic bags, in particular, are notorious for this and often end up in our waterways. Any time we can reduce plastic waste and reuse what was once single use, it’s a win for the planet. At LRNow, we love to support local businesses, and our fellow non-profits in strengthening their eco-friendly practices.”
It’s just one more way we’re making our builds smarter, more sustainable and more in line with the kind of world we want to create for these kids and their families.
A Greener Future Starts With Us
At Roc Solid Foundation, we believe in going the extra mile for children, for families and for the future of our planet. Whether it’s celebrating a child’s courage with eco-friendly confetti or rethinking how we handle plastic waste, we’re constantly looking for ways to be a better environmentally responsible nonprofit.
Lastly, there’s another powerful reason behind our passion for outdoor play… getting outside and being active helps kids heal. Studies show that time spent in nature can reduce stress, strengthen the immune system and support emotional well-being, all of which are especially important for kids fighting cancer. Every playset we build is more than just a structure—it’s a gateway to movement, fresh air and moments of joy that are essential to the recovery journey.
This Earth Day, we’re proud of these steps and even more excited about what’s next. Because hope isn’t just something we build for today. It’s something we nurture for generations to come.
